5/26/2022 – A Challenging But Fun Paddle
Wind and Waves
A stiff south wind drove patchy clouds and choppy waves to the north end of Seneca Lake. Two paddlers on a day trip to the Finger Lakes were eager to get out on the water and test their kayaking skills picked up on vacations in the Caribbean and the Aegean Sea. As we set off from the public boat launch at the Finger Lakes Welcome Center, it was clear that they could handle the rough conditions. As we paddled along the wide crescent shore, our path was crisscrossed by kite and windsurfers taking advantage of the 15mph winds. Three-quarters of an hour later, we arrived at Seneca Lake State Park Beach for a short break.
Calm Canal Waters
We launched back into the shallow water at the beach and made for the mouth of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. The Canada Geese reminded us to keep our distance from their goslings with animated honking, and a close encounter with a Great Blue Heron made for a memorable experience. A young Northern Water Snake even made an appearance.

After paddling against the wind for the better part of the tour, our guests opted for a leisurely walk back to the welcome center through the state park. Overall, the day was a challenging and rewarding experience. Find out more about this tour and view the gallery here.
