Kayak the historic Cayuga-Seneca Canal, a spur of the New York State Erie Canal System. Begin your journey at Oak Island in Waterloo, N.Y., heading west for five miles, on this man-made waterway experiencing abundant wildlife. We will exit the canal at the Seneca Lake State Park boat launch where the picnic area is just a short walk away. After eating and resting we will kayak the five miles back up the canal to Oak Island, completing this 10-mile journey in 5-6 hours.

This full day kayak is for beginners looking to try kayaking for the first time and those with more experience looking for a leisurely, pleasant day on the water. The Cayuga-Seneca canal is often flat as glass with the exception of the wakes from some passing pleasure craft. This makes it a great place to try kayaking for the first time and enjoy the beautiful environment.


  • Arrive at 10:30AM to gear up and learn paddling and safety basics.
  • Start at Oak Island at 11:00AM
  • Arrive at Seneca Lake State Park for lunch at 1:00PM.
  • Leave the park around 2:00 to 3:00PM
  • Arrive Back at Oak Island around 5:00PM


Parking at the Oak Island Boat Launch is free and there are well maintained restroom facilities at both ends of our journey. Highlights include plentiful bird watching along the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. Seneca Lake State Park, and beautiful views of the lake and downtown Geneva. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks!
